India’s Cricket Team Set to Compete in T20 World Cup 2024

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that Rohit Sharma will be leading a 15-member Indian cricket team for the men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in the West Indies and USA in June. Hardik Pandya, who captained the Indian T20 team in Rohit Sharma’s absence last year, has been selected as the vice-captain for the upcoming tournament.

The leading run-scorer in IPL 2024, Virat Kohli, has also been included in the squad chosen by the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant will be making his comeback to the Indian team after recovering from a car accident in December 2022. Another wicket-keeper, Sanju Samson, has also been named in the squad.

Despite his recent form, KL Rahul did not make it to the final squad, while Shubman Gill has been named as a reserve player. Lower-order batsman Rinku Singh has also been included in the reserves. Left-handed batsman Shivam Dube, known for his consistency in both international and domestic cricket, has earned a spot in the final squad.

The squad also features spin all-rounders Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, along with spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. The Indian pace attack comprises Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh, with Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan named as reserve bowlers.

India, who emerged victorious in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 by defeating Pakistan in the final, will be aiming to secure their second title in June. The team will kick off their campaign against Ireland in New York, with a highly-anticipated clash against Pakistan scheduled for June 9 in New York as well.

Rohit Sharma is the only member in the current Indian squad who was part of the victorious 2007 T20 World Cup team. The squad includes players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and others. Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan will serve as reserves for the team.
