India’s Under-19 World Cup Pursuit Comes to an End: Stats

Feb 11, 2024

Australia claimed their fourth Under-19 World Cup title by defeating India by 79 runs. This victory brought their total to four titles, having previously won in 1988, 2002, and 2010. This victory also marked the first time Australia had defeated India in an Under-19 World Cup game since 1998. Prior to this win, India had won all six meetings between 2000 and 2022.

This win also ended India’s 22-match winning streak in youth ODI games while chasing, with their previous loss in a similar situation occurring in August 2018 against Sri Lanka. Despite this loss, India’s captain Uday Saharan scored 397 runs, the second-most for a captain in a single edition. India’s opening partnership against USA during a group stage game was their highest of the tournament at 46, marking the first time they failed to achieve at least a 50-run opening partnership at an Under-19 World Cup.

Australia’s final total of 253 for 7 against India was the highest by any team in an Under-19 World Cup final, surpassing England’s 242 for 3 in a chase against New Zealand in 1998. Additionally, only Pakistan in 2006 has been able to defend their Under-19 World Cup crown, with both Australia and India finishing as runners-up in 2012 and 2020 and 2024, respectively.

This win was significant as it ended Australia’s losing streak against India in the Under-19 World Cup and was a historic achievement in a tournament filled with impressive statistics and accomplishments.
