The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will be closing down on July 1, with two new agencies poised to take its place. The Department of Public Health (DPH) will oversee DHEC’s remaining public health and healthcare quality programs, while the Department of Environmental Services (DES) will be responsible for air quality, coastal management, land, and waste management.

Dr. Edward Simmer, the Acting Director of DPH, will hold a press conference on Monday morning to discuss the changes. The conference will introduce the Department of Public Health, explain the implications of the DHEC split, and provide information for South Carolinians on what they need to know. The event will take place at 9 a.m. at the Mills-Jarret Building at 2100 Bull Street, and will be livestreamed online.
