Introducing The Build Issue of The Download

The concept of building is a prominent theme in the tech industry, particularly in Silicon Valley where “Time to build” acts as a rallying cry. However, the future is constructed incrementally from the imperfect decisions made in the present. What may seem like progress today could prove to be setbacks in the future, highlighting the importance of the actions we take and those we choose not to take.

In our Build issue, we explore these themes and more through a variety of compelling stories. Melissa Heikkilä’s cover story delves into whether the AI boom will lead to robotics’ own ChatGPT moment. Additionally, we investigate a government-led project in Louisiana aimed at addressing sinking homes, commercial companies like Axiom Space building private structures to replace the International Space Station, and the strange history of brainwashing in America.

We also examine the implications of generative AI on user experience, the unfulfilled promise of AI in improving police bodycams, and the transition to a fully decarbonized world powered by renewable resources. This selection is just a glimpse of what our magazine has to offer, so be sure to subscribe to read the full issue.

One interesting development in the solar industry is the move by a solar giant to bring manufacturing back to the US. While the US was once a leader in solar technology, production has largely shifted to China due to government subsidies and cost efficiencies. This shift highlights the complexities of global manufacturing and the potential for reshoring production to the US.
