Apple has rolled out the second beta of iOS 18, which now supports the Rich Communication Service (RCS) protocol. This update allows users to utilize all the features of iMessage to send and receive messages using data or WiFi between iPhone users and even Android users. Previously, Apple only allowed sending messages, photos, and videos over WiFi networks or mobile data to other Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. These messages are end-to-end encrypted and displayed in a blue bubble, while messages to Android devices appear in green bubbles, as they use SMS/MMS formats which are not encrypted.

The integration of the RCS protocol into Apple’s messaging service was announced at the end of last year. This update aims to provide a better interoperability experience compared to traditional SMS or MMS messaging. Users who have tried the RCS feature in the second beta release have reported seeing indicators at the top of their iMessage chats to show that it is an RCS message. The RCS protocol offers various style functions that enrich conversations, such as writing indicators, read receipt notifications, and the ability to transfer high-quality photos and videos.

Unlike iMessage’s characteristic blue bubbles, RCS messages, including text and multimedia files, are displayed in green bubbles. This distinction allows users to easily differentiate between the two types of messages. The update has been well-received by users, including those on major US carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, who have experienced the new functionality. Overall, the adoption of RCS in iOS 18 signifies a significant advancement in Apple’s messaging capabilities and enhances the overall messaging experience for users.
