Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdul Latif al-Zayani recently met with Ali Bagheri-Kani, the acting Foreign Minister of Iran, in Tehran to discuss the restoration of relations between the two countries. The talks were held in the context of the historical ties, religious connections, good neighborly relations, shared history, and mutual interests that exist between Iran and Bahrain.
The relationship between Iran and Bahrain has been strained in the past, particularly due to Bahrain’s Shiite-majority population and its accusations of Iranian interference in its internal affairs. In 2011, Bahrain’s ruling dynasty faced challenges to maintain power, which were only overcome with the help of Saudi intervention. However, more moderate monarchies in the region have recently been working towards improving their relations with Iran.
In alignment with this trend, Bahrain has also taken steps towards improving its ties with Iran. The discussions between the foreign ministers of the two countries reflect a willingness to foster better relations based on historical, religious, and common interests. This signifies a shift in Bahrain’s approach towards Iran and a willingness to engage in dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
