Iran and Russia discuss cooperation to address Armenia-Azerbaijan issues

During a meeting with Russia’s special envoy for the regulation of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister stressed the importance of finding solutions to issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He called for Tehran and Moscow to work together in the Caucasus region to address their mutual interests. Bagheri Kan emphasized that the Caucasus region is a sphere of national security and interests for both Iran and Russia, highlighting the need for collaboration between the two countries.

Bagheri Kani stated that the current events in the Caucasus region, including the increasing intervention of foreign forces, require strategic coordination and ongoing consultations between Iranian and Russian officials. He also emphasized the importance of maximizing the activities of the regional “3+3” format. Russia’s representative echoed the need for close and continuous interaction and coordination to combat interference by non-regional players.

The “3+3” format is a regional cooperation initiative initiated by Turkey and supported by Russia following the 44-day Karabakh war. It involves the participation of the three South Caucasian countries (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan) as well as the three regional powers (Russia, Turkey, and Iran). Georgia has opted not to join the platform due to conflicts with Russia.
