Is the NFL Ready to Embrace Technology and Replace Chain Gangs?

Despite the many technological advancements in football, the traditional method of spotting the ball by eye and measuring it with the chain gang has remained in place. However, change is on the horizon as the NFL is set to transition to an optical tracking system for line-to-gain rulings.

According to a report by CBS Sports, the optical tracking system will be used in the 2024 preseason, with the potential for full implementation by the start of the regular season that year. The system is designed to reduce human error when spotting the ball and was tested at MetLife Stadium and Hard Rock Stadium last season.

For the system to be fully implemented, the NFL would need to install it in all 30 stadiums as well as any stadiums used for international games. If the league is not satisfied with the preseason trial of the optical tracking system, its implementation could be delayed until 2025.

Despite the potential changes, the chain gang will still be utilized as a backup system. This will provide players, coaches, and fans with a familiar visual reference, while also serving as a failsafe in case the optical tracking system encounters any issues.
