The Foundation for Digital Sustainability recently released a report titled “Smart Working: the digital challenge” on National Smart Working Day. The report examined the opinions of Italians on hybrid work models, comparing views from residents of large cities to those living in smaller municipalities. The study aimed to understand how the urban context influences perceptions of smart working in relation to digital sustainability.
The research revealed that a majority of Italians believe that the future of work will involve a hybrid approach, combining remote work with in-person work. 79% of residents in large cities and 70% of those in small towns share this vision. One prominent finding was the positive impact of smart working on the environment, with many interviewees acknowledging that remote work reduces CO2 emissions. This environmental benefit was recognized by 81% of urban residents and 76% of those in small towns.
In addition to its environmental advantages, smart working was also seen as beneficial for personal well-being. A better work-life balance was highlighted as a key advantage, with 79% of urban dwellers and 74% of rural residents agreeing. Remote working was also viewed as a tool to promote gender equality, although there was a disparity in perception between large cities and small towns.
While productivity was seen as a primary benefit of remote working, concerns were raised about social and corporate isolation. Many workers expressed worries about reduced interactions with colleagues, emphasizing the importance of finding a balance in hybrid work models. The research also pointed out a disparity in the adoption of digital tools between large and small centers, highlighting the need for greater investment in training and digital literacy.
Overall, the report emphasized the importance of a balanced and inclusive approach to digital transformation and smart working. Investment in digital training, support for hybrid working models, and promotion of inclusion policies will be crucial to maximizing the benefits of smart working in terms of environmental, social, and economic factors. Stefano Epifani, President of the Foundation for Digital Sustainability, stressed the significance of technology in enabling smart working, while also cautioning against potential negative effects if not implemented thoughtfully.
