Italian World Cup skier, Jean Daniel Pession, tragically dies in mountain accident with girlfriend

Italian World Cup speed skier Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, Elisa Arlian, tragically lost their lives in a mountain accident in northwest Italy, as confirmed by the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI). The federation expressed their condolences to the Pession family for the devastating loss. Pession, a 28-year-old World Cup team member, was also a skiing instructor at the Antagnod Ski School in northern Italy, and the couple’s funerals were held on Tuesday.

The couple fell 700 meters from the summit of Mount Zerbion, above the resort village of Champoluc in the Aosta Valley region, after setting out on a familiar route. After concerned family members contacted rescue services when they did not return home, helicopters were deployed for a search. The bodies of Pession and Arlian were found tied together following an hours-long search by helicopters, as there were no visible signs on the rocks indicating where they had fallen.

According to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), Pession finished 15th in the 2021 World Cup standings for speed skiing and was in the top 25 at the 2022 World Championships in Vars. The tragic accident has deeply impacted the world of winter sports, particularly the speed skiing community, with the loss of two talented individuals. The entire winter sports community mourns the loss of Pession and Arlian and sends thoughts and prayers to their loved ones during this difficult time.
