JCB Introduces State-of-the-Art Technology Class in Oswego County

Students in the JCB Integrated Manufacturing Program recently participated in a class focusing on robotics. In this program at John C. Birdlebough High School, six dedicated technology students are leading the district’s initiative to emphasize technology and robotics education. Under the guidance of technology teacher Corey Szyikowski, these students – Tyler Bertrand, Tallen Prior, Abby Spade, Ed Kelly, Cody Hager, and Zach Henderson – are delving into the intricacies of robotics and basic programming. They have had hands-on experience with VEX Robotics and Dobot Robotics, learning about manufacturing processes, assembly lines, and conveyer belts.

The students’ hard work culminated in a project where they designed a small-scale factory to assemble LEGO cars. To succeed in this project, they had to create an assembly line and coordinate two different systems to work together seamlessly. Divided into three two-person groups, the students were able to bring together their individual contributions to complete the project successfully. According to Szyikowski, the class offers ample opportunities for problem-solving skills to be developed.

Sophomore Abby Spade particularly enjoys the hands-on nature of the program, emphasizing the active engagement in class activities. She also appreciates the small class size and the collaborative environment that allows them to work effectively together. Junior Ed Kelly sees this program as a stepping stone towards his dream of becoming an engineer. He values the interactive learning environment that allows students to actively participate in changing the outcomes through practical application.
