Jenni Hermoso, a Spanish footballer, has filed a complaint against Luis Rubiales, the Spanish FA chief, for sexual assault. This comes after Hermoso was kissed on the lips by Rubiales following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the Women’s World Cup final. Despite Hermoso stating that the kiss was not consensual, Rubiales has refused to resign. The controversy surrounding the incident has overshadowed Spain’s historic win. Last week, prosecutors announced that they would meet with Hermoso to allow her to present her accusation against Rubiales. The accusation was made by Hermoso on Tuesday. Rubiales has been suspended from his position and received a provisional suspension from FIFA for 90 days due to his refusal to step down. Rubiales defended himself, acknowledging “obvious mistakes” but denying any aggression or discomfort during the kiss.
Jenni Hermoso, a 33-year-old forward, currently plays for Mexican club Pachuca. She has previously played for top Spanish and European clubs such as Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico Madrid.
In the aftermath of the scandal, the former head coach of the Spanish women’s team, Jorge Vilda, expressed feeling it was unjust for him to lose his job. Vilda was the only member of the women’s national team coaching staff not to resign in protest of Rubiales’ actions. The Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed Vilda’s dismissal on Tuesday afternoon. Concerns over Vilda’s coaching methods and regime were reportedly a significant factor in 15 Spain players refusing to play for the national team last year.
