Jeremy Roach declares for NBA Draft but will retain NCAA eligibility, enters transfer portal from Duke

Duke point guard Jeremy Roach announced on social media Tuesday that he is entering the transfer portal after four seasons with the Blue Devils. The former five-star prospect started 108 games during his time at Duke under both Mike Krzyzewski and Jon Scheyer. Roach played a pivotal role during a transitional period for the program. With the return of guards Caleb Foster and Tyrese Proctor, the Blue Devils have a solid backcourt despite Roach’s departure. However, adding another guard through the transfer portal may be beneficial for Duke since they also lost Jared McCain to the NBA Draft. The nation’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class includes several talented perimeter players, but none are prototypical on-ball guards like Roach.

Roach will have one season left to play using the bonus year of eligibility provided to players due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He is expected to be one of the top point guards available in the 2024 transfer cycle after earning third-team All-ACC honors in the 2023-24 season. The Leesburg, Virginia native averaged 14 points and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 42.9% from three-point range in 32.7 minutes per game. His time at Duke had its highs and lows, including standout performances in the 2022 NCAA Tournament where he helped the Blue Devils reach the Final Four.

Roach’s decision to enter the transfer portal comes at a time of great change for Duke basketball as they navigate a new era under head coach Jon Scheyer.
