Jerry West, a former NBA player and basketball executive, passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday. West, who is known for his iconic silhouette that became part of the NBA’s logo, had a successful career with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning multiple championships. He also had stints as an executive with the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, and Los Angeles Clippers.

In addition to his playing career, West was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame three times for his contributions as a player, a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team, and as a contributor. The Clippers announced West’s death on Wednesday, paying tribute to his legacy in the basketball world.

Born in West Virginia, West had a successful high school and college career before joining the Lakers as a player. After retiring, he transitioned to coaching and later became the team’s general manager, where he played a key role in shaping the Lakers’ “Showtime” dynasty, which won five championships.

West was known for his late-game heroics and earned nicknames like “Mr. Clutch” and “Zeke from Cabin Creek.” He was a 14-time All-Star, a 12-time All-NBA selection, and an NBA Finals MVP. In 2019, President Donald Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to the sport.

West is survived by his wife Karen and five sons, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of basketball.
