Nate McMillan, the former head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, is now set to join the Los Angeles Lakers as an assistant coach under JJ Redick. The Lakers have also hired Scott Brooks to join McMillan at the front of Redick’s bench. Together, Brooks and McMillan bring a combined experience of 2,363 games as head coaches in the NBA.
Brooks, a former player at UC Irvine, is known for his time coaching the Oklahoma City Thunder where he helped develop stars like Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden. He also had a stint as head coach in Washington before joining Chauncey Billups’ staff in Portland. McMillan, on the other hand, has experience coaching in Seattle, Portland, Indiana, and Atlanta.
The Lakers are still working to fill out the rest of Redick’s coaching staff, including another front-of-bench assistant. The decision to hire McMillan and Brooks follows a desire within the Lakers organization to model their coaching staff after the successful 2019-20 season, which featured Jason Kidd and Lionel Hollins working under head coach Frank Vogel.
