The Chargers announced on Monday that they have signed first-round offensive tackle Joe Alt to a four-year deal worth $33.2 million, including a $20.9 million signing bonus. Alt was selected as the fifth overall pick by the Chargers after finishing his career at Notre Dame as one of the top offensive linemen in the nation. He earned unanimous All-America honors in 2023 as a junior and served as team captain for the Fighting Irish during his final season, helping the offense average 39.1 points per game. Alt was a finalist for the Lombardi Award, which recognizes college football’s best lineman.
In addition to his accolades as a junior, Alt was a first-team All-American as a sophomore in 2022. He started 33 of 38 career games played for the Fighting Irish, becoming the highest-drafted Notre Dame offensive lineman in over 50 years. Alt is the first Fighting Irish lineman to be selected in the first round since 2018 when Quenton Nelson went to the Colts and Michael McGlinchey to the 49ers. Alt comes from a football family, as his father John was a first-round draft selection by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1984 and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
