The Copper Country Invitational held at Houghton High School saw new school records being set by athletes from Lake Linden-Hubbell and Chassell, both with close family ties. Senior sprinter Matthew Jokela from Lake Linden-Hubbell broke the long-standing 200-meter and 400-meter school records, previously set in 1990 and 1969, respectively. Jokela’s dedication to off-season training paid off as he set new records for both events.

Following in her brother’s footsteps, junior Emily Jokela also set new school records in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. The Jokela siblings were not the only ones making history, as Chassell junior Kalvin Kytta broke his brother’s and coach’s school record in the 1600-meter and set a new standard in the 800-meter run as well.

Kolson Kytta, Kalvin’s brother and coach at Chassell, had previously held the record for the 1600-meter, which Kalvin surpassed by two seconds. Additionally, Kalvin broke a 40-plus-year record in the 800-meter run. Both Matthew and Emily Jokela, along with Kalvin Kytta, showcased their talent and set new benchmarks in their respective events at the invitational.
