Justin Steele of the Cubs reveals raw emotion following difficult inning

The Cubs had been able to keep their visible frustration in check despite a challenging stretch, according to manager Craig Counsell who emphasized the importance of players being themselves on the field. He believed that allowing players to be who they are would bring out their best selves, fostering confidence and team success. However, this sentiment shifted during a game at American Family Fields.

During the game, Cubs starter Justin Steele displayed visible frustration after surrendering the lead in the 3rd inning. He expressed his anger by yelling as he walked back to the dugout after each step. The team’s self-inflicted errors, including misplays that allowed Milwaukee to get back in the game, seemed to contribute to this frustration.

The trouble began with a leadoff single, a stolen base, and a fielding error that put a pair of runners in scoring position. A bunt and a bloop hit then led to Milwaukee tying the game. Although Steele managed to strike out the next two batters to escape further damage, his emotions boiled over in a display of frustration that was uncharacteristic for the team.

The game highlighted how even a team that typically keeps emotions in check can be affected by mistakes and setbacks on the field. Despite Counsell’s emphasis on allowing players to be themselves, the Cubs’ reactions during this game showed that even the most composed athletes can struggle to maintain their cool under intense pressure.
