Justin Thomas shocked the golf world by announcing his split from caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay just a week before the Masters. Thomas took to social media to express his gratitude for Mackay’s partnership, highlighting the major victories and unforgettable experiences they shared together, such as the PGA Championship in 2022, the Presidents Cup, and the Ryder Cups.

In a surprising move, Thomas has enlisted veteran caddie Matt Minister, previously with Patrick Cantlay, to carry his bag for the upcoming Masters tournament. Thomas made the decision to part ways with Mackay after a tough stretch in his career, aiming to revitalize his game with a new caddie by his side.

Thomas, a 15-time Tour winner, had hired Mackay in 2021 following his commentary gig with NBC Sports, transitioning from his longtime partnership with Phil Mickelson. The duo found success in winning Thomas’ second major, but Thomas struggled in the 2023 season, failing to make the FedExCup playoffs and needing a Ryder Cup captain’s pick.

Despite the challenges, Thomas has shown signs of improvement recently, posting multiple top-12 finishes since last fall. With his father’s guidance on his swing, Thomas has made strides in his approach play, though he still struggles with his putting, ranking outside the top 150 in strokes gained.

Mackay, who was set to work as an on-course reporter for NBC during the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, received well wishes from Thomas as they parted ways. Thomas expressed confidence in both their future endeavors and acknowledged the impact Mackay had on his career and personal life.
