Vice President Kamala Harris recently hosted a Women’s History Month celebration at her Washington residence in conjunction with the Women’s Sports Foundation, established by tennis icon Billie Jean King. The event brought together a diverse group of women to honor the theme of trailblazing females in sports.

The reception, which included a guest list of over 100 women, featured accomplished athletes and influential figures in the sports world. Among the attendees were individuals such as Nikki Fargas, president of the Las Vegas Aces, Renee Montgomery, retired WNBA player and part owner of the Atlanta Dream, and Lisa Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP and four-time Olympic gold medalist, who all praised the trailblazing women in sports.

During the event, Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of the work being done daily by these women to benefit people of all genders. The atmosphere of the vice president’s residence was transformed into a space of celebration, reflection, and a recognition of the crucial role women have played in shaping sports history.

Harris also highlighted the significance of providing equitable access to opportunities in sports, which can lead to the development of strong leaders and a more resilient nation. She shared her mother’s advice about being the first and paving the way for others, emphasizing the importance of self-empowerment and standing up for oneself.

As part of her efforts to support female athletes, Harris has made surprise visits to young female athletes across the country. She visited coach Dawn Staley and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team in January, and she recently surprised the St. Paul Central High School softball team, which was also invited to the Women’s History Month reception.

Sheila Matthews, a digital producer at Andscape and an HBCU graduate, believes in the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women in sports. Her social media is open for discussions and debates, and she is passionate about advocating for gender equality in all fields.
