Feb 11, 2024

Kenyan marathon record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who recently set a new world record with a time of two hours and 35 seconds in the Chicago marathon, has tragically passed away in a traffic accident, along with his coach Garvais Hakizaman. The news was confirmed by Eldoret traffic commander Dennis Muga and former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga.

Kiptum, at 24 years old, had already won two marathons in 2023 and was aiming to break the two-hour barrier in the Rotterdam marathon in April. His world record-breaking performance in Chicago took 34 seconds off the previous record set by Eliud Kipchoge.

Raila Odinga expressed the nation’s grief over the loss of Kiptum, calling him a true hero and a remarkable individual. It is a devastating loss for the Kenyan athletics community.
