Ken Holtzman, the most successful Jewish pitcher in MLB history, and a three-time World Series champion with the Oakland Athletics, passes away at the age of 78

Ken Holtzman, a legendary Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher and one of the winningest Jewish pitchers in the league’s history, passed away at the age of 78. This news was confirmed by the Chicago Cubs on Monday via social media. Holtzman had an impressive career, pitching two no-hitters for the Cubs and contributing to the Oakland Athletics’ three consecutive World Series championships in the 1970s.

Holtzman, who grew up in the St. Louis area and excelled at the University of Illinois before going pro, was a two-time All-Star with a career record of 174-150 and a 3.49 ERA. He played for teams like the Athletics, Cubs, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles during his career.

The left-handed pitcher’s achievements included throwing two no-hitters for the Cubs and winning back-to-back 17-win seasons. He was known for his remarkable performance on the field, especially during his time with the Cubs. After being traded to the Oakland Athletics, Holtzman joined a rotation that included other star pitchers like Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter, leading the team to three straight World Series victories.

Holtzman was not just a talented athlete but also a valuable team player. He represented different teams over the years, such as the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, and won a championship ring with the Yankees in 1977. Even though he did not participate in the playoffs that year, his contribution to the team’s success was invaluable.

The Chicago Cubs paid tribute to Holtzman’s legacy through a social media post, expressing their deep sorrow over his passing and extending condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. Holtzman’s remarkable career and achievements will always be remembered in the baseball community.
