The Flash Bistro in the Student Center has recently introduced Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, allowing customers to make purchases using an Amazon One palm print, credit card tap, or Flashcard. This technology eliminates the need for cashiers or self-checkouts, making the shopping experience more convenient for customers.

The store’s transformation was part of Culinary Services’ plan to incorporate new technology into its stores. Assistant director of retail, Kristin Burney, mentioned that some customers initially felt like they were stealing when using the technology. However, once they received an accurate receipt, they felt more comfortable with the process.

The store is equipped with cameras that track individual customers as they move through the space. This technology enables the store to charge the account of the person who entered a group, ensuring accurate billing. Scales in product shelves monitor which items are taken, allowing for correct charging and a better understanding of customer preferences.

While students can use their Flashcards at the store, the cameras do not utilize facial recognition or photos from the school’s database. Instead, a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and generative AI enables the technology. The store offers the same products as other campus markets but aims to attract more customers with its convenience, such as no lines and extended hours.
