Scotland’s performance in their match at a major tournament was disappointing, as they failed to have a single shot on target since Euro 1992 against the Netherlands. Their only goal came from an Antonio RĂ¼diger own goal. This defeat marked the heaviest loss for Scotland in a major international tournament since their 7-0 loss to Uruguay at the 1954 World Cup.

In addition to not having a shot on target, Scotland also conceded five goals in a match for the first time since 2012 when they lost 5-1 to the United States. The last time they had conceded five goals in a competitive match was in a 6-0 loss to the Netherlands in a Euro qualifier back in 2003.

The match also saw Scotland’s centre-half Ryan Porteous being sent off, making him the second Scottish player to be sent off at a major tournament after Craig Burley in the 1998 World Cup against Morocco. This incident marked the first sending off in the opening game of the Euros since 2012 when both Sokratis and Wojciech Szczesny were sent off in the 1-1 draw between Poland and Greece.
