La Paz attempts to restore calm with preachers in the Plaza, 500 troops, and blocked streets

The traffic chaos, the opening of shops, and the incessant movement of pedestrians in El Alto, the second most populated city in Bolivia – adjacent to La Paz – contrast with the recent coup attempt that took place just 17 hours prior. General Juan José Zuñiga had mobilized tanks to attempt a vintage-style coup that had not been seen in the country for at least 42 years. The atmosphere in El Alto is a stark contrast to the events that unfolded in La Paz, where chaos and tension were palpable.

Hours after General Zuñiga attempted to enter the Burnt Palace, the seat of government of President Luis Arce, the streets of El Alto are bustling with activity. Protesters block the El Alto-La Paz highway, creating a blockade with stones and amplifying their protests with loudspeakers. Meanwhile, in La Paz, the city is marked by heavy police presence and security measures around Plaza Murillo and government buildings.

In the center of La Paz, despite the disruptions caused by the coup attempt, life goes on as usual for many residents. People gather in Plaza Murillo and the Metropolitan Cathedral, vendors wait for customers, and workers carry on with their daily tasks. The failed coup attempt has left behind a sense of unease and tension, but the city is slowly returning to normal.

In the aftermath of the coup attempt, the government of Bolivia has taken measures to ensure stability and security. The attempt left several people injured, and a number of soldiers have been arrested in connection with the incident. The situation in La Paz is being closely monitored, and efforts are being made to prevent any further disruptions to daily life.

Despite the turmoil, life in other parts of Bolivia carries on. In Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a city located 859 kilometers away from La Paz, the events in the capital seem distant. Workers at the airport go about their daily routines, unaffected by the chaos unfolding in the political sphere. The repercussions of the coup attempt are felt in various ways, from shortages of fuel to increased security measures in public spaces.

As Bolivia navigates the aftermath of the coup attempt, the government is focused on maintaining stability and addressing the economic challenges facing the country. Amidst the political turmoil, life goes on for the people of Bolivia, who are resilient in the face of adversity.
