The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing ongoing support to close the COVID-19 and routine vaccination gaps in Lao PDR and strengthen the country’s health system. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has donated $260,000 worth of equipment, which was procured by WHO and distributed to health facilities across Laos. This equipment includes 250 laptops to collect data, expand the national electronic immunization registry, and identify individuals scheduled to receive vaccinations. Additionally, there are 1,500 kits for safe vaccination and response to adverse events following immunization (AEFI), as well as 2,375 heavy-duty backpacks for vaccine storage and transportation in hard-to-reach areas. 100 tablets will also be provided to WHO to improve vaccination plans and village data collection. The Department of Health expressed gratitude to the United States Government, USAID, and WHO for their contributions. Laos will be the first to track and store vaccination data, ensuring no one is left behind during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. This support will also strengthen routine childhood immunization and improve the health system’s capacity to meet the needs of the Lao people in the future. Michael Ronning, USAID country representative, emphasized the increased cooperation between the United States and Laos in improving the health system. Dr. Yinlu Lo, the Lao WHO Representative, praised the Lao government for using the pandemic to strengthen the health system and expressed gratitude for the support from partners like USAID. The U.S. government, through USAID, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Defense, UNICEF, and the WHO, has been providing support for the national COVID-19 vaccination rollout and enhancing medical capabilities in various areas.
