Lara Gut-Behrami, a Swiss skier, rallied from ninth place on the first run to win the Soldeu giant slalom in Andorra on February 10. This was her fourth giant slalom win of the season, moving her to the top of the overall FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup standings, surpassing Mikaela Shiffrin. Shiffrin had been recovering from a knee injury sustained in a crash at the Cortina downhill last month.

After the first run, Gut-Behrami trailed leader Marta Bassino by 0.61s, but she came back with the second-best performance in the second run, setting a tough standard for the women competing after her. Despite making mistakes, Bassino and her Italian compatriot Federica Brignone missed out on the podium.

Gut-Behrami’s combined time of 1:59.27 secured her the win, beating New Zealand’s Alice Robinson by one-hundredth of a second. Shiffrin’s teammate AJ Hurt finished in third place, 0.15 off the pace.

Gut-Behrami expressed her happiness with the win after the race, stating that it was a tough race and her plan for the second run was to attack. She aimed to improve on everything she had missed in the first run and was pleased that it worked out.

With the win, Gut-Behrami now leads Shiffrin by five points in the overall standings and is 135 points ahead of Brignone in the race for the giant slalom Crystal Globe. Some of the women will be competing again in the Soldeu slalom on Sunday.
