Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami won the Soldeu giant slalom in Andorra after starting from ninth place in the first run. The victory marked her fourth giant slalom win of the season, propelling her past Mikaela Shiffrin in the overall FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup standings. Shiffrin, who is recovering from a knee injury, fell to second place in the standings.

Despite trailing leader Marta Bassino by 0.61s after the first run, Gut-Behrami came back with the second-best performance in the second run. Her time of 1:59.27 saw her edge out New Zealand’s Alice Robinson by just one-hundredth of a second. Shiffrin’s teammate AJ Hurt finished in third place, 0.15s off the pace.

Gut-Behrami expressed her happiness about the win and the tough race. She explained that her plan for the second run was to attack and improve upon any shortcomings from the first run. With her victory, Gut-Behrami now leads Shiffrin by five points in the standings, and is 135 points clear of Federica Brignone in the giant slalom Crystal Globe race.

The skiers will return for the Soldeu slalom on Sunday.
