Largest Cruise Ship in the World Catches Fire Following Departure from Florida

A small fire broke out on Tuesday on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship. The fire was quickly extinguished and isolated to a crew area, with no injuries reported. The ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico at the time of the incident.

Though the ship briefly lost power, backup power was activated immediately and the main power systems were restored. The ship’s itinerary was not affected by the fire or power outage. The Port of Miami-based Icon of the Seas set sail on a week-long Western Caribbean cruise on Saturday and is scheduled to return to Miami on June 29.

The Icon of the Seas, which set sail for the first time in January, has a capacity of up to 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members. News Channel 8 reached out to Royal Caribbean for further information on the incident.
