Businesses For a Safer Las Cruces is a group dedicated to combating crime in Las Cruces. Vic Villalobos and Donna Stryker, spokespersons for the organization, explained that they started the group due to concerns about crime, homelessness, and property destruction in the area. With Stryker having been a business owner for 13 years and Villalobos for 20 years, they both saw the need to address these issues.

One incident that particularly stood out was the death of LCPD officer Jonah Hernandez on the corner of Villalobos’ property. This tragedy highlighted the seriousness of the crime problem in Las Cruces and prompted Villalobos and Stryker to start talking to other business owners in the area. They discovered that issues such as trespassing, assaults, break-ins, and vandalism were all too common.

Businesses For a Safer Las Cruces meets regularly at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum and has a list of businesses that support law enforcement by providing discounts and rest areas. The organization also has a Facebook group where the community can join to stay connected and informed about their efforts to combat crime in the area.
