This year is expected to be a historic one for women’s elite sports, as revenue is projected to surpass the billion-dollar mark for the first time ever. The estimated revenue for 2024 is $1.28 billion, a significant increase from the $981 million generated in 2023. According to a report by Deloitte released in November, the growth in revenue is promising, with women’s football (soccer) projected to contribute the most (43%), followed by basketball (28%) and tennis (5%), while other sports will make up the remaining 23%.

While sports are a lucrative business, they also serve as an inspiration for the corporate world by shaping societal norms. Putting a spotlight on female athletes can help change the conversation around gender, challenge stereotypes, and provide new images of strong role models. Research has shown that there is a clear connection between women who participate in sports and female leadership in society and the workforce. A study by Ernst and Young and espnW from 2020 found that 80% of female Fortune 500 CEOs have a background in sports.

Overall, the growth and success of women’s elite sports not only have economic implications but also play a role in shaping attitudes and perceptions towards women in leadership roles. By highlighting the achievements of female athletes, we can continue to promote equality and diversity in all areas of society.
