Leveraging Technology for Increased Economic Opportunities

Recent research conducted by HP in collaboration with Oxford Economics highlights the crucial role of technology in promoting economic inclusion and sustainability. According to the study, a significant majority of business and government leaders (76%) identify technology as essential to enabling traditionally marginalized groups to access the economy. This data not only reinforces the perception of digital as a bridge towards equity, but also signals a radical change in the approach to economic and social development policies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as one of the most influential technologies in this context, with many business leaders currently employing it or planning to do so in the near term to pursue crucial sustainability objectives. 90% of these use AI to improve access to digital education, 89% to develop the workforce, and 86% to increase diversity within their organizations. This technology not only increases the productivity and efficiency of companies, but also reduces the risk of human errors and stimulates creativity and the generation of new ideas.

HP’s Chief Supply Chain Officer, Ernest Nicolas, believes that AI has the potential to accelerate sustainable development and social impact goals. From responsibly designing AI PCs for new users to supporting local farmers with data analysis, AI can move businesses and communities forward by driving progress and innovation.

However, the digital divide remains a pressing issue, with about a third of the world’s population still offline, leading to billions of dollars in lost GDP annually. HP recognizes the importance of expanding access to technology and equipping people with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital economy. Through initiatives like the free HP LIFE skills development program and partnerships with organizations like World YMCA and Junior Achievement, HP is working towards reducing the digital divide and promoting greater social equity.

HP’s latest “Sustainable Impact Report” showcases the company’s efforts in expanding digital equity and promoting digital literacy. By launching Digital Hubs and Creative Labs, as well as offering HP LIFE courses and mentoring programs, HP is making strides towards reaching its goal of engaging 2.75 million users in the free HP LIFE skills development program by 2030.

In addition, HP is expanding its focus on educating on the responsible use of AI by introducing a new AI skills course as part of the HP LIFE Digital Business Skills program. Initiatives like the Premio HP AI in Social Impact and the launch of Next-Gen AI PCs demonstrate HP’s commitment to using technology to advance education, healthcare, and economic opportunities globally.
