Liberty University’s Department of Biology and Chemistry will be hosting its inaugural Summer Science Camp for incoming freshman and local high school students from June 24 to 28. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will feature two sessions where participants can engage in various science activities. These activities include EKGs to observe heart electrical activity, forensic science with fingerprinting and crime scene assessment, human cadaver dissection, organic chemistry, microbiology, and more. The sessions will be hands-on and supervised by Liberty professors, undergraduates, and graduate students.
Dr. Ben Kalu, Chair of the Department of Biology and Chemistry, shared that the goal of the camp is to expose students to the diverse programs in the natural sciences before they start college. The department boasts expert faculty, outstanding programs, and state-of-the-art equipment that can provide students with a strong foundation for their careers. The camp aims to show students the possibilities of pursuing a college education in science, even if they come from families without a college history.
The camp is particularly focused on reaching students who may be first-generation college attendees and helping them see that achieving a college education is not only possible but also fascinating. Dean Heidi DiFrancesca is passionate about providing opportunities for community members who may not have access to college experiences. The camp aims to start a conversation with students and guide them towards realizing their potential in the field of science.
Registration for the Summer Science Camp is currently open. For more information, interested individuals can contact biologyandchemistry@liberty.edu or call (434) 582-2209.
