“I believe that these drifts, let’s call them drifts, that have come out in this last week in such a striking way have always been there, hidden, not exhibited, but that in part they have always been there and that with this government they are taking advantage of this great power of the right, which after all was voted and went to government, it is not that it is revolutionary, we should not be ashamed of anything anymore”. Senator for Life Liliana Segre expressed this sentiment regarding the Fanpage investigation on the FdI youth movement in an interview on In Onda on La7. She added, “I followed the various broadcasts, this session – let’s call it that – also chanting ‘Sieg Heil’, even these Nazi mottos that unfortunately I remember directly and not by hearsay: now, at my age, will I have to see this again? Will I have to be kicked out of my country again as I was kicked out once?”

Segre’s remarks highlight the disturbing resurgence of extreme ideologies and hate speech in Italian politics, particularly among the youth. The senator’s experience of being forced out of her country due to intolerance serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of allowing such ideologies to gain traction.

The journalist observes that the question posed by Segre is provocative, to which she responds, “It’s a question that is an answer…” This exchange encapsulates the urgency with which individuals like Segre are responding to the rise of hatred and extremism in society. By speaking out and bringing attention to these issues, they hope to prevent history from repeating itself.

The interview with Segre sheds light on the need for vigilance and action in combating hate speech and discriminatory behavior. As she reflects on her own experiences, she emphasizes the importance of standing up against intolerance and ensuring that history does not repeat itself.
