Lions ink UFL kicking star Jake Bates to 2-year deal

The Lions recently signed Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates to a two-year contract. Bates, who previously visited the Washington Commanders and Green Bay Packers, has caught the attention of many NFL teams with his impressive performance for the Panthers. Despite not being the most accurate kicker, converting 77% of his field goals for his former team, Bates has shown a strong leg and the ability to make long-distance kicks.

During his time with the Panthers, Bates notably hit 64- and 62-yard field goals, showcasing his ability to kick from long range. His performance has garnered attention in the NFL, with the Lions being the latest team to sign the young kicker. Bates has previously had stints with the Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers without finding a permanent home in the league.

In last season’s NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, Campbell’s decision to forego field goal attempts in favor of going for it on fourth down proved pivotal. The Lions ultimately fell short in a 34-31 defeat, with missed opportunities costing them valuable points. Bates’ signing signals the Lions’ intention to secure a reliable kicker and address their kicking situation heading into the new season.
