State leaders have reported that Oklahoma’s tourism industry is growing. The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department has noted an increase in the number of people interested in traveling to Oklahoma in 2023. Executive Director Shelley Zumwalt shared that in 2022, revenue from tourism in Oklahoma rose from $10.5 billion to $12.8 billion. This data is tracked by companies like Omnitrak, which monitor hotel stays and events across the state.

Zumwalt highlighted the natural attractions that Oklahoma has to offer, such as sand dunes and waterfalls. Additionally, sports play a significant role in the state, with Oklahoma City set to host various events for the 2028 Summer Olympics. This will bring even more attention to Oklahoma, showcasing what the state has to offer to a global audience.

Zumwalt emphasized the importance of tourism as economic development, stating that it is the third largest industry in Oklahoma. Tourism generates over $833 million in state and local taxes, making it a crucial driver of economic activity in the state. By promoting tourism to residents of other states, Oklahoma can attract more visitors and continue to boost its economic growth through the tourism industry.
