Local Health Agencies and Animal Services Respond to Avian Flu Outbreak

Local doctors and animal experts in San Luis Obispo, California are urging caution around animals as the avian flu spreads across the country. The SLO County Public Health is advising people to refrain from eating or drinking around birds or livestock to prevent the spread of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

Dr. Rick Rosen from San Luis Obispo County Public Health warned that the avian flu has already spread from birds to other animals like cows, chickens, and cats, and suggested that it is only a matter of time before it affects other species. It is important to wash hands thoroughly after coming into contact with birds, livestock, or items in their spaces to prevent transmission.

The FDA recently reported that some grocery store milk products have tested positive for the flu, and a dairy worker in Texas also tested positive. Local doctors and animal service crews are encouraging farmworkers to take precautions by wearing masks and gloves when handling certain animals. They are also advised to avoid direct contact with sick or dead birds, livestock, and their feces unless wearing recommended personal protective equipment (PPE).

Beachgoers are reminded to avoid touching or going near dead birds, as these animals can also carry the virus. If someone has had contact with a sick or dead bird or animal, they should watch for symptoms and contact a doctor immediately if they start to feel unwell. Public Health can be reached at 805-781-5500 for those without a regular doctor.

Local experts are being consulted to understand how the national outbreak of avian flu is impacting the Central Coast. To learn more about avian flu, click here.
