Legend Kinney and Malakhi Anderson were seen jumping backwards into the Bridge Park Swimming Pool on Wheeling Island. With the recent heat wave, many swimmers have been taking advantage of the pool to stay cool.
Wheeling’s first responders and hospital officials have noted that most local residents are doing a good job of keeping themselves cool during the heat wave. The Wheeling Fire Department’s EMTs have had very few calls related to heat-related illnesses. Chief Jim Blazier emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding the heat, especially for those with health problems.
Dr. Stanley Guertal, medical director of the emergency department at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, reported that they have not seen an increase in heat-related patients. Both Blazier and Guertal encouraged residents to find ways to cool down, such as visiting local swimming pools or cooling centers.
As temperatures are expected to stay high, it is crucial for residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Staying hydrated with water, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seeking shelter in cool locations are all recommended during this time.
