During the second day of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Vegas Golden Knights made a trade, sending goaltender Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals. Thompson, who is 27 years old, had spent parts of four seasons with the Golden Knights and was on the Stanley Cup winning team in 2022-23, although he missed the final three months of the season due to injury. His time with the Golden Knights came to an end on a Saturday, which was a bit awkward timing as he was scheduled to have an autograph session for fans inside the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Despite the trade being announced shortly before the autograph session, Thompson went through with it as a way to say goodbye to the fans who had supported him throughout his time in Las Vegas. He spent an hour signing autographs and taking photos with fans. After meeting with the reporters, Thompson, who has one year left on his contract, admitted that he had requested a trade and mentioned that it will take some time for him to process the move to Washington.

Thompson already has some familiarity with the Capitals organization, as he was part of their affiliate team in Hershey during the 2019-20 season. He also attended their development camp in 2019 and has a relationship with Capitals goaltending coach Scott Murray. Following the trade of Thompson, the Golden Knights acquired Akira Schmid from the New Jersey Devils to serve as a backup for starting goaltender Adin Hill.
