Los Angeles 2028 suggests including Para climbing in its Paralympic lineup

The organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games have put forward a proposal to include Para climbing in the upcoming edition of the Games. This proposal will be reviewed and voted on by the International Paralympic Committee on June 26. Janet Evans, the Chief Athlete Officer of LA 2028, expressed gratitude towards the Committee for considering the addition of this exciting sport, highlighting the opportunity it presents for athletes to compete on a global stage.

LA 2028 took various factors into account when selecting Para climbing as a potential addition to the Games, including its popularity both globally and domestically, its presence at major international events, and the logistical considerations involved. The International Sport Climbing Federation has been organizing world championships for Para climbing since 2011, with the U.S. securing nine medals in the most recent edition in 2023.

Sport climbing made its Olympic debut in Tokyo and will feature in the upcoming Paris Olympics as well as the Los Angeles 2028 Games. The organizers of LA 2028 have made history by proposing additional sports for both the Olympics and Paralympics, with an array of sports added to the program for the 2028 Games following a vote by IOC members. Recent reforms by the IOC allow host cities to suggest the inclusion of new sports solely for their edition of the Games.

The Los Angeles Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place from August 15 to 27, 2028, marking the first Summer Games in the U.S. since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The addition of Para climbing to the program will further diversify and enhance the range of sports available for athletes to showcase their talents on a global platform.
