Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry set to approve healthcare legislation

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Governor Jeff Landry made announcements regarding the Louisiana Department of Health leadership and signed healthcare bills on Tuesday morning. The first bill he addressed created a new position of surgeon general within the state, which was authored by Representative Brach Myers.

Governor Landry emphasized the importance of having a physician leading the healthcare efforts in the state, working alongside the LDH Secretary, who will act as a CEO. He believes that this strengthened partnership will benefit the overall healthcare system in Louisiana.

Ralph Abraham was appointed as the new surgeon general, while Michael Harrington was named the new LDH Secretary, and Drew Maranto was appointed as the Undersecretary of LDH. Abraham shared his vision for the surgeon general role, which involves focusing on public health policy and collaborating with various healthcare stakeholders in the state.

Since taking office in January, Governor Landry has signed multiple bills into law aimed at improving various aspects of the state. Last week, he signed into law the LA Gator Scholarship Program, allowing parents to use tax dollars to send their children to a school of their choice. Additionally, a new law was passed requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms.

Louisiana, traditionally a Republican state, has become even more aligned with conservative values under the leadership of Governor Jeff Landry.
