LSU Health Shreveport faculty members receive NIH grants

Two LSU Health Shreveport researchers recently received over $5 million in grant funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Ana-Maria Dragoi, MD, PhD, and Shenuarin Bhuiyan, MD, PhD were recognized for their research in infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases.

Dragoi, an assistant professor of Molecular & Cellular Physiology, was granted $1,788,500 over five years for her work on the bacteria that causes gonorrhea. This grant will allow her to study how Neisseria gonorrhoeae interacts with the immune system to develop new treatments for the disease.

Bhuiyan, an associate professor of Pathology & Translational Pathobiology, received $3,301,740 over five years for his research on heart failure. His project focuses on the role of Sigmar1 in activating cellular processes to protect against heart failure.

These grants are two of 31 active R01 grants awarded to researchers at LSU Health Shreveport. To subscribe to The Times, visit https://help.shreveporttimes.com/subscription-services. For more information, contact reporter Makenzie Boucher at mboucher@gannett.com.
