A Lufthansa passenger plane carrying almost 340 people had to return to Frankfurt am Main on Thursday due to an unusual smell on board. The company stated that the reason for this unscheduled return was an unidentifiable electrical smell in the cabin. The Boeing 747-8 was en route to Chicago when the incident occurred, as reported by “Bild”.
Fortunately, there was no smoke on board the plane and the cause of the smell remains unknown. Once the plane landed “normally” in Frankfurt, technicians examined it to determine the source of the odor. The 320 passengers and 19 crew members disembarked as usual and were expected to continue their journey with a replacement plane later that evening.
Lufthansa emphasized that the decision to turn around was made as a precaution to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. According to reports from “Bild”, the smell was first noticed 90 minutes after takeoff while the plane was flying over the Atlantic Ocean.
