Lufthansa, the German airline, has announced that prices for tickets purchased after June 26 for flights after December 31, 2024 will increase. This price increase is due to a new European regulation that will require airlines to switch to more environmentally friendly fuel. The price increase will vary depending on the length of the flight, with short and medium flights seeing an increase of 5-7 euros per ticket and long-haul flights increasing by 18-72 euros per ticket.

The new regulation mandates that airlines use 2% of environmentally friendly fuel SAF from 2025, which is five times more expensive than traditional jet fuel. The goal is to increase the use of SAF to 70% by 2050. This shift towards more sustainable fuel options is a significant step towards reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint.
