Lufthansa, the German airline, has announced that prices for tickets purchased after June 26 for flights after December 31, 2024 will increase. This price increase is due to a new European regulation that will require airlines to switch to more environmentally friendly fuel. The price increase will vary depending on the length of the flight, with short and medium flights seeing an increase of 5-7 euros per ticket and long-haul flights increasing by 18-72 euros per ticket.
This price increase will affect all airlines within the Lufthansa holding, including Eurowings, Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. The new regulation mandates that airlines use 2% of environmentally friendly fuel SAF from 2025, which is five times more expensive than traditional jet fuel. The goal is to increase the use of SAF to 70% by 2050. This shift towards more sustainable fuel options is a significant step towards reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint.
As airlines prepare for this regulatory change, passengers can expect to see higher ticket prices reflecting the increased cost of environmentally friendly fuel. Lufthansa and its affiliated airlines are committed to complying with these regulations and investing in more sustainable practices to help mitigate the environmental impact of air travel.
