Lumen Field to install grass for World Cup in early 2026

Feb 11, 2024

Peter Tomozawa, the CEO of the Seattle local organizing committee, recently announced that the process of installing a grass surface at Lumen Field for the 2026 World Cup is already underway. The grass that will be used for six games at the stadium during the World Cup is currently being grown. There will be four group games, including one United States match, along with one round of 32 and one round of 16 game in Seattle.

Lumen Field has utilized an artificial surface since it first opened in 2002, as the home for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, Seattle Sounders of the MLS and Seattle Reign of the NWSL. A new artificial surface is currently being installed at the stadium.

Peter Tomozawa stated that the field replacement process will begin in 2025 and grass should be in place by early spring of 2026. The men’s World Cup has never used an artificial surface for games, and grass is preferred by U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter. Several other stadiums around the U.S. will also need to come up with grass solutions for the 2026 event.

Tomozawa mentioned that advanced planning during the construction of the stadium should make the process of installing grass in 2026 easier, as the stadium already has some infrastructure built in it.
