Macron Urges “Olympic Truce” for Paris 2024

100 days after the opening of Paris 2024 and on the eve of the lighting of the Olympic flame in Athens, President Emmanuel Macron kicked off the countdown to the highly anticipated international sporting event, where France is the organizing country. In a televised speech on Bfmtv and Rmc radio, Macron called for an “Olympic truce” emphasizing respect, tolerance, and safety for all athletes. The Olympic Games are set to take place from July 26 to August 11 amidst global instability, including armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Europe.

With the threat of jihadist terrorism looming over the event, as well as possible strikes by trade unions in France, Macron assured that the government has contingency plans in place. He expressed determination to showcase the best of France through successful opening and closing ceremonies for both the Olympics and Paralympics. Macron addressed the issue of terrorism, emphasizing that France will not be deterred from dreaming and that security measures are in place to ensure the safety of all participants.

In response to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, Macron advocated for an Olympic truce, highlighting the importance of respect and tolerance among competitors. He stressed that athletes from countries involved in conflicts, such as Russia and Israel, have no part in politics and should be able to compete peacefully. Macron also underlined the significance of sports, citing its positive impacts on society, education, and health.

Setting ambitious goals for French athletes, Macron aimed for a top 5 finish with 80 medals at the Olympics and a top 8 finish with 40-50 medals at the Paralympics. He acknowledged challenges in making the Paris metro accessible for disabled individuals and announced measures such as providing taxis for people with reduced mobility during the Games. Macron addressed controversies surrounding the event, including racist reactions to the singer Aya Nakamura’s participation, promising a diverse and entertaining show with various artists.

With a focus on the legacy of the Olympics, Macron highlighted the long-term benefits of the event, including new structures and infrastructures that will benefit communities in the future. He emphasized the importance of creating lasting legacies, such as water sports centers, to enhance the lives of residents in areas like Seine-Saint-Denis. Macron confirmed his presence at the welcoming of the Olympic flame in Marseille and expressed his commitment to swimming in the Seine before the Games begin.
