Joel Makin made history by becoming the first Welshman to reach the British Open semi-finals since 2000 when David Evans claimed the title. The 29-year-old secured a remarkable victory over world champion Diego Elias in the quarter-finals held at the Birmingham Rep Theatre. Makin’s impressive performance resulted in an 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 win, marking one of his best showings on the squash court.

Reflecting on his achievement, Makin expressed his belief in his abilities and strategy against Elias. Despite acknowledging Elias’ exceptional skills, Makin was confident in his game plan and performance on the court. This victory was especially significant for Makin, who had not previously recorded a single win at the British Open despite participating since 2017. His success not only secured him a spot in the semi-finals but also ended Wales’ long wait for a men’s semi-finalist since David Evans’s victory 24 years ago.

Fresh off his recent triumph at the Manchester Open, Makin now prepares to face world number one Ali Farag of Egypt in the semi-finals. His perseverance and success despite facing challenges this year showcase his determination and talent on the professional squash circuit. As Makin gears up for the next stage of the tournament, he remains focused on his goal of competing for the prestigious title.

In the women’s division, British player Georgina Kennedy is set to play her quarter-final match against world champion Nouran Gohar, with Hania El Hammamy facing Tinne Gilis in the remaining quarter-final. Meanwhile, Nour El Sherbini and Nour El Tayeb have already secured their spots in the semi-finals, setting the stage for intense competition in the upcoming rounds. Additional quarter-final matches in the men’s draw feature players from Egypt, the United States, Malaysia, and New Zealand, highlighting the international competitiveness of the tournament.
