Man, 53, Dies of Tick-Borne Typhus After Mistaking Symptoms for COVID

Barak Ben-Noy, a 53-year-old artist from Pardes Hanna, passed away from complications of tick-borne typhus. About three weeks ago, he started feeling unwell and assumed he had contracted the coronavirus, so he did not seek medical attention. His wife Mati, who had previously suffered from tick-borne typhus, recognized the symptoms and urged him to go to the hospital. Barak confirmed that he had been bitten by a tick while gardening.

Upon arriving at the hospital, he was diagnosed with tick-borne typhus and given antibiotics. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to him being put into a medically induced coma and connected to a respirator. Despite efforts to save him, Barak passed away a few hours later, leaving his wife and son devastated.

Tick-borne typhus is a bacterial disease transmitted by ticks, with symptoms including headache, muscle pain, and a rash. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, and rash, especially during the summer months when ticks are most active.

Barak’s wife Mati is urging people to be more vigilant about their health and to seek medical help promptly if they suspect they have been exposed to tick-borne diseases.
