Man has fish bone fragment lodged in his tongue

Mr. Duc, a 45-year-old man, experienced difficulty swallowing while eating rice and mistakenly believed he had a bone stuck in his throat. In trying to push the bone down with his tongue, he accidentally pierced his tongue with a piece of bone. Two weeks later, his discomfort intensified, making it difficult for him to eat and drink, prompting him to seek medical help at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. A throat endoscopy revealed that a foreign object was lodged deeply in the soft tissue at the tip of his tongue, surrounded by swollen mucosa. Upon suspicion of a fish bone stuck under Mr. Duc’s tongue, the doctor ordered an ultrasound to locate the foreign object.

The ultrasound revealed a 2cm long foreign object creating a pus pocket in Mr. Duc’s tongue. A minor surgery was performed to remove the sharp-tipped fish bone. Doctor CKI Nguyen Trung Nguyen confirmed that the fish bone had been stuck for two weeks without complications of abscess or infection. Prompt removal of the foreign object prevented further spread of infection. Doctor Nguyen emphasized that folk methods of removing bone fragments, such as swallowing rice or using fingers, are ineffective and may worsen the situation by pushing the bone deeper into the surrounding tissue.

Foreign bodies, especially fish bones, are common in the throat and can cause serious complications if not promptly addressed. Doctors advise against risky eating behaviors, particularly with foods like rice, fish, or seeds that can cause choking. Symptoms of swallowing foreign objects should be taken seriously and prompt medical attention sought to prevent complications. In case a fish bone is deeply lodged, surgery may be required.
